Overview

Desert National Park, spanning 3,162 sq km across Jaisalmer and Barmer districts, represents one of India's largest national parks and world's most important desert ecosystems. The Barmer section offers pristine Thar Desert landscape - undulating sand dunes, rocky outcrops, saline lake beds, sparse vegetation - supporting remarkable biodiversity adapted to extreme conditions. The park is critically important for Great Indian Bustard conservation (fewer than 150 birds remain worldwide). Besides the bustard, visitors can spot desert fox, Indian gazelle (chinkara), desert cat, monitor lizards, numerous snake species, and over 120 bird species. The landscape itself mesmerizes - endless golden dunes, fossilized wood from ancient forests, unique geological formations. Unlike African safaris, Desert National Park offers intimate desert experience - silence, vastness, harsh beauty. Best visited during winter when wildlife congregates around scarce water sources and temperatures allow comfortable exploration.
