Junagarh Fort
Unconquered 16th-century fort with exquisite palaces, intricate architecture, and rich royal history
Overview
Junagarh Fort stands as one of the few major forts in Rajasthan built on plain ground rather than a hilltop, yet it was never conquered despite numerous attacks. Built in 1593 by Raja Rai Singh, a general in Emperor Akbar's army, this magnificent fort complex showcases an extraordinary blend of Rajput, Mughal, and Gujarati architectural styles. The fort houses 37 palaces, temples, and pavilions, each more ornate than the last, featuring intricate stone carvings, gold leaf paintings, mirror work, and colorful frescoes. The 986-meter-long fortification wall with 37 bastions protected treasures including the Anup Mahal (Hall of Private Audience) with its stunning gold leaf work, Karan Mahal with its beautiful mirror and gold work, and Phool Mahal (Flower Palace) with its mirror-studded ceiling. Unlike many Rajasthani forts that became hotels, Junagarh remains a museum preserving centuries of royal heritage, weapons, manuscripts, and miniature paintings.
