Overview

Karni Mata Temple, located in Deshnoke 30 km from Bikaner, is one of India's most unusual religious sites. The temple houses approximately 25,000 black rats called "kabbas" that are considered sacred and worshipped. According to legend, Karni Mata, a 15th-century mystic and avatar of Goddess Durga, bargained with Yama (god of death) to reincarnate her devotees as rats until they could be reborn into her clan. Devotees from across India come to seek blessings from the rats, and spotting a rare white rat among the thousands is considered extremely fortunate. The temple features beautiful silver doors donated by Maharaja Ganga Singh, marble carvings, and intricate artwork. While the concept may seem shocking to outsiders, it's a deeply respected pilgrimage site where feeding and protecting rats is sacred duty. The temple operates with strict hygiene protocols, and devotees walk barefoot among the rats as mark of respect.
