Overview

The Rampuria Havelis represent the pinnacle of merchant wealth and architectural patronage in late 19th-century Bikaner. Built by the wealthy Rampuria family of traders between 1870-1920, this cluster of seven grand havelis showcases the economic power and refined taste of Bikaner's merchant class. These multi-story mansions feature elaborate red and yellow sandstone facades, intricately carved jharokas (overhanging balconies), jali work (latticed screens), floral motifs, and beautiful frescoes depicting mythological scenes and daily life. Each haveli tried to outdo the others in architectural splendor, resulting in a concentrated area of stunning craftsmanship. The havelis incorporate British colonial elements like arches and columns alongside traditional Rajasthani features, reflecting late 19th-century architectural fusion. While most remain private residences (limiting interior access), the extraordinary exterior facades, narrow lanes lined with ornate buildings, and overall atmospheric old city neighborhood make it essential for architecture and photography enthusiasts visiting Bikaner.
