Brahma Temple
World's only Brahma temple, ancient pilgrimage site with red spire
Overview
The Brahma Temple is extremely rare - one of very few temples in the world dedicated to Lord Brahma, the creator in Hindu trinity. Built in the 14th century (though site is much older), the temple features a distinctive red spire and marble floors. According to mythology, Brahma performed a yajna (sacrifice) here, and his wife Savitri cursed him so he would be worshipped only in Pushkar. The temple houses a four-headed marble idol of Brahma and images of Savitri and Gayatri. The temple is always crowded with pilgrims, especially during Kartik Purnima. Visitors must remove shoes and leather items. Photography inside is usually not permitted. The temple's location directly facing Pushkar Lake makes the approach through ghats and bazaar atmospheric.
