Pushkar Lake
Sacred lake with 52 ghats, center of Hindu pilgrimage and spiritual ceremonies
Overview
Pushkar Lake is one of Hinduism's most sacred lakes, mentioned in ancient scriptures as Tirtha Raj (king of pilgrimage sites). According to legend, the lake was created when Lord Brahma dropped a lotus flower and water sprang from three spots. The lake is surrounded by 52 ghats (bathing steps), each with its own spiritual significance and associated temples. Pilgrims come year-round to take holy dips, especially during Kartik Purnima (full moon in November) when thousands gather for ritual bathing. The ghats come alive during morning and evening aarti (prayer ceremonies) with chanting, bells, and floating oil lamps. The lake's serene atmosphere, combined with white-washed ghats, temples, and surrounding hills, creates a mystical ambiance unique to Pushkar.
