Overview

Jag Mandir, also known as "Lake Garden Palace," sits on an island in Lake Pichola and served as a summer resort and pleasure palace for Udaipur's royalty. Built between 1551 and 1652, the palace famously provided refuge to Mughal Prince Khurram (later Emperor Shah Jahan) in 1623, who was rebelling against his father. This act of hospitality inspired Shah Jahan's use of marble in the Taj Mahal. The palace features magnificent marble work, intricate stone elephants at the entrance, the Gul Mahal pavilion, and the beautiful Darikhana (assembly hall) with black and white marble floors. Today part of the palace operates as a luxury event venue while sections remain open for tourists arriving by boat.
