Overview

Jagdish Temple, built in 1651 by Maharana Jagat Singh I, is Udaipur's largest and most important temple. This three-story Indo-Aryan style temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu (Laxmi Narayan) and rises 79 feet on a tall terrace with steep steps. The temple showcases exquisite stone carving work on pillars, walls, and ceilings - depicting scenes from Ramayana, Mahabharata, and Bhagavad Purana. The sanctum houses a black stone idol of Lord Vishnu (Jagannath), while smaller shrines around the main temple are dedicated to Shiva, Ganesh, Surya, and Goddess Shakti. The temple's shikhara (spire) dominates the old city skyline and is visible from City Palace.
