Paris in Every Season
Paris is magnificent year-round, but timing your visit dramatically affects your experience. Spring brings cherry blossoms and café terraces. Summer means long golden evenings but tourist crowds. Autumn offers mild weather and fashion week energy. Winter is quiet, romantic, and festive — but grey and cold. The sweet spots are April-June and September-October.
Spring & Early Summer (April-June)
The classic Paris experience. Temperatures climb from 12°C (April) to 22°C (June). Cherry blossoms in the Tuileries, wisteria on Montmartre buildings, and the Seine sparkles. Key advantages:
- Jardin du Luxembourg and Tuileries gardens at peak beauty
- Café terraces open without summer heat
- Daylight until 9:30 PM by June (perfect for evening walks)
- French Open tennis (late May-early June) adds sporting buzz
Downsides: Hotel prices rise sharply from mid-May. Rain is possible — always carry a compact umbrella. Book Louvre/Orsay tickets 2-3 weeks ahead.
Autumn: The Insider's Favorite (September-October)
Many Parisians consider autumn the best season. The summer tourists leave, but the weather remains pleasant (15-20°C). September brings Fashion Week energy, gallery openings, and the rentrée (literary season — new books fill every shop window).
October delivers fall colors in Père Lachaise cemetery, Bois de Boulogne, and along Canal Saint-Martin. Mushroom season means incredible market finds and restaurant specials (cèpes, chanterelles).
The Nuit Blanche art festival (first Saturday in October) opens museums and galleries for free overnight — a unique Paris experience.
When to Avoid (and Exceptions)
August: Half of Paris leaves on vacation (les grandes vacances). Many neighborhood restaurants, bakeries, and small shops close entirely. Major attractions remain open but feel oddly corporate without locals. Exception: August is excellent if you want quiet streets and don't mind limited local dining.
November-January: Grey, cold (3-8°C), dark by 5 PM. Exception: Christmas markets (late November-December) are magical, and January sales (les soldes) offer 50-70% off fashion.
July: Hot (25-35°C), crowded, and many Parisians have already left. Exception: Bastille Day (July 14) fireworks at the Eiffel Tower are spectacular.
