Gadisar Lake
Scenic man-made lake with temples, ghats, and gateway, perfect for sunset and birdwatching
Overview
Gadisar Lake, built in 1367 by Maharaja Gadsi Singh, served as Jaisalmer's primary water reservoir. This picturesque man-made lake is surrounded by ornate sandstone temples, ghats (steps), shrines, and chattris (cenotaphs). The iconic Tilon Ki Pol gateway, an ornate yellow sandstone archway, marks the entrance to the lake. The lake attracts numerous migratory birds in winter, making it a peaceful spot for birdwatching. Paddle boats are available for lake exploration. The lake is especially beautiful at sunrise and sunset when golden light reflects off the sandstone structures and still water. Despite being artificial, Gadisar has become an important ecosystem supporting fish, birds, and plant life. It offers a serene escape from Jaisalmer's busy fort area.
