Jaisalmer
Golden City
The Golden City - living fort rising from Thar Desert with golden sandstone architecture
Overview
Jaisalmer, the "Golden City," rises from the Thar Desert like a mirage with its golden sandstone architecture glowing in the desert sun. Founded in 1156 by Rajput ruler Jaisal Singh, the city was a major trading center on the ancient Silk Road. The magnificent Jaisalmer Fort, one of the world's few living forts, houses nearly 3,000 residents with shops, hotels, and ancient havelis within its walls. The city is famous for its intricately carved havelis (mansions), particularly Patwon Ki Haveli with its ornate facades. Jaisalmer is the gateway to desert adventures - camel safaris across sand dunes, overnight desert camps, and traditional Rajasthani folk performances under starlit skies.
