Sam Sand Dunes
Iconic Thar Desert sand dunes with camel safaris, sunset views, and desert camping
Overview
Sam Sand Dunes, located 40 km west of Jaisalmer, offers the classic Thar Desert experience with sweeping sand dunes, camel safaris, and spectacular sunsets. These golden dunes stretch as far as the eye can see, reaching heights of 30-60 meters. Sam is the most popular desert destination near Jaisalmer, famous for camel rides at sunset, overnight desert camping, and cultural performances under the stars. While commercialized with many camps and tourists, Sam still delivers an authentic desert experience, especially if you venture beyond the main tourist area. The best experience involves a camel safari into quieter dunes, watching sunset over endless sand, followed by Rajasthani folk music, traditional dinner, and sleeping under stars in a desert camp.
