Umaid Bhawan Palace
One of world's largest private residences, part museum, part luxury hotel
Overview
Umaid Bhawan Palace, completed in 1943, is one of the world's largest private residences with 347 rooms. This magnificent Art Deco palace was built during a severe famine as a famine-relief project, employing over 3,000 workers for 15 years. The golden-yellow sandstone structure blends Rajput, Mughal, and European Art Deco architectural styles. Today the palace is divided into three parts: the royal family's residence, a Taj luxury hotel (one of world's best), and a museum open to public. The museum showcases vintage cars, clocks, royal artifacts, and photographs. The palace is set in 26 acres of lush gardens with peacocks roaming freely. The blend of Eastern and Western architecture with modern Art Deco elements makes it unique among Rajasthan's palaces.
